High Wycombe 26 - 53 Maidenhead
Maids took the opportunity to blood a few new players in this friendly and after a shaky start ran out convincing 53-26 winners. The home side certainly enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and held the lead for much of the first half, but converted tries from centre Jan Weddepohl and No8 Steve Bourne, plus a penalty from fly-half Dave Goodman, saw Maids begin to assert some authority. A much better second-half performance, led by livewire scrum-half Jamie Shore, enabled Weddepohl to grab two more tries for his second hat-trick of the season. Wycombe’s resistance finally crumbled in the last 15 minutes as further tries from Bourne, Tom Lam, Al McEwan and George Blackwell, plus three conversions by Goodman, completed the visitors’ account. Maids face a far sterner in their next two league games, visiting Buckingham 3rds this Saturday before a home fixture against Bletchley 2nds, whose first team play in the same division as Maidenhead 1sts!
